Aradia possesses a
unique standing within Wiccan mythology. Many do not acknowledge her at
all, for she does not appear to originate from pagan times. However, in
1899 Charles Leland wrote Aradia: Gospel
of the Witches, which supposedly contained the beliefs and mythology
of a group of contemporary Italian witches. Little evidence has ever come
to light regarding the existence of these witches, much less the historicalness
of their existence. According to Leland,
Aradia is the daughter of Diana and Lucifer, sent by Diana to earth to
instruct the first witches in their craft so that they could rise up against
their oppressive lords. Lucifer here is not used in the traditional Christian
context, but as the Lightbringer. Her associations
are almost exclusively magical in nature. She is a Maiden goddess. Aradia is particularly revered among Gardnerians. Strega Witches - practitioners of Italian Witchcraft, also honor her. |
