Common Deities

While we may believe in the existence of hundreds if not thousands of different deities, each individual Wiccan generally works with a very limited number. Many limit themselves to two - one god, one goddess - but this is not nearly universal.

The following list is meant to provide nothing more than an overview. Each of these figures possesses a full, rich mythology that should be explored. Gods are not just a list of attributes, despite what 3rd grade Greek Mythology tried to teach most of us - they are beings with personalities as complex as any mortal's. I swear I'm going to kick the ass of the next devoted follower of Athena who can't tell me anything more about her than that she is a wise warrior who likes weaving.

The groupings represent varying levels of popularity. The top grouping is fairly distinct. The line drawn between groups 2 and 3 is more arbitrary. The "Other" group contains deities not known in antiquity.

Some deities are generally assumed to be different names for the same being. Most commonly this occurs between Greek and Roman gods. In these cases I list both, starting with the one more commonly used within Wiccan circles.
